What is the difference between cast stone & natural granite products?
At Double L, we manufacture and stock a wide range of both Cast and Natural Granite products, each with its own unique qualities.
Cast Stone Products:
Cast Stone is made by combining various sands, chippings, and cement. These materials are mixed together and then cast into molds to form the desired shape. To achieve a perfect finish, we apply our special techniques that enhance the appearance and durability of the product.
Natural Stone Products:
Natural Granite is a piece of nature itself. It is quarried, cut to size, and then flamed at high temperatures to achieve a stunning, appealing finish. This process brings out the unique beauty and texture of the stone.
Which One To Choose? Both Cast Stone and Natural Granite products are equally durable and weather-resistant, so the choice ultimately comes down to personal preference. Our customers typically make their decisions based on colours and finishes. We invite you to visit our display area and choose the option that best suits your project.
How do I maintain cast stone & natural granite?
Both Cast Stone and Natural Granite products are highly resistant to the Irish weather conditions. However, due to the natural porosity of all stone types, we always recommend sealing the stone to protect it for longer-lasting enjoyment. Sealing the stone fills the pores, preventing dirt from penetrating and making maintenance easier.
For the best results, we recommend using our sealers to preserve the beauty and durability of your stone.
What is the difference between natural granite & porcelain paving?
The main difference between Natural Granite and Porcelain Paving lies in their porosity.
Porcelain Paving:
Porcelain is a man-made product with very little to no porosity, making it incredibly low-maintenance. One of the advantages of porcelain paving is its wide range of colours and shades, many of which are designed to imitate natural stone, offering a variety of aesthetic options.
Natural Granite Paving:
Natural granite is a product of nature, cut and shaped into paving slabs. Because it is a natural stone, it has pores, which means it requires slightly more maintenance than porcelain. However, sealing the stone can help prevent dirt from penetrating the surface. For those looking to achieve a more aged or rustic look, natural stone is an ideal choice, as it weathers beautifully over time(if not sealed).
Which One to Choose?
Ultimately, the choice depends on your preferences. Both Natural Granite and Porcelain Paving are highly suitable for patios, walkways, and other outdoor projects, offering their own set of benefits depending on your desired look and maintenance requirements.
What products are suitable for a driveways?
The choice of paving for a driveway depends on the type of project and the kind of vehicles expected to use the area. Generally, we recommend using slabs that are 30mm thick or our cobble sets for durability.
However, in recent years, many of our customers have successfully used 20mm thick natural granite slabs or porcelain paving, especially in areas with light car traffic.
Note: For any paving project, the thickness of the stone is important, but it's not the only factor. Proper preparation of the base and correct installation of the slabs are crucial to ensuring a durable and long-lasting driveway or patio.
If you have any more questions or would like to learn more about how to create a durable driveway or patio, please don't hesitate to contact us. We’ll be happy to provide detailed explanations and guide you through the process.
How do I measure the size for pillar caps?
Choosing the right size for a pillar cap is simple, yet very important. The correct size not only enhances the visual appeal but also helps prevent potential water stains on your pillar.
To measure the right size:
- Measure the width of your pillar.
- Add 50mm to each side of the pillar’s width.
For example, if your pillar is 440mm wide, the calculation would be:
440mm + 50mm + 50mm = 540mm.
So, a pillar cap around 540mm would be perfectly suitable. This extra overhang ensures that water runs off the cap and stays clear of the pillar.
Note: As a general rule of thumb, the larger the pillar, the more overhang is required for proper protection.
If you’re still unsure about the size you need, please feel free to contact us. We’ll be happy to assist you!
How do I measure the size for wall caps?
Similar to the pilar caps, choosing the right size for a pillar cap is simple, yet very important. The correct size not only enhances the visual appeal but also helps prevent potential water stains on your walls.
To measure the right size:
- Measure the width of your wall.
- Add 35 to 50mm to each side of the wall width.
For example, if your wall is 100mm wide, the calculation would be:
100mm + 50mm + 50mm =200mm.
So, a wall cap around 175 to 200mm would be perfectly suitable. This extra overhang ensures that water runs off the cap and stays clear of the wall.
Note: As a general rule of thumb, the larger the wall, the more overhang is required for proper protection.
If you’re still unsure about the size you need, please feel free to contact us. We’ll be happy to assist you!
